Barefoot Debtors

Read Amos 1:1 through 4:13

The fathers of Charles Dickens and John Wesley in the 1800s were once imprisoned for unpaid debts. Yet in the ancient world, debtors were often sold into slavery.

This is what the Lord says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals” (Amos 2:6).

This was the issue when Amos condemned callous creditors who sold into slavery a debtor so poor they used their shoes as collateral. Yet God’s policy in the Mosaic Law for the debtor was not punishment but compassionate restoration.

There is one debt that no one can repay because of imperfect humanity; it is debt of sin to God. Yet Jesus was imputed with that debt—the sins of all humanity—on the Cross, and as people believe in Him, God cancels their debts because His Son paid the bill.

As always, God’s eternal policy for debtors is not punishment but compassionate restoration.

Thought for Today: Being free from sin allows people to serve God freely.
